I
have been very lucky with my horses over the years
and this is no exception.
In 2002 a very
special filly was born, bred by Mike Gill of Avon
Arabians. I recall the first time I saw her as a
yearling, she was a real looker, beautiful bright
bay with flashy white markings and so in proportion.
Most young horses go through a gangly stage where
they just don't look quite right but Nasma never
did, she always looked like a small version of a
mature horse. Quite intelligent too, or Mike would
call it impossible to deal with. She would
frequently try his patience by going under his
electric fences and eating his poor trees while he
was out and mingling with the other horses in their
paddocks.
After debating
whether to sell her Mike, doing something that not
many people would do, gave her to me as a gift with
the agreement he would get a foal from her some day
and he would have peace of mind knowing she was in a
good home.

I broke her in
as a 2 1/2 year old, super bright and so easy to
work with, I was riding her inside 2 hours. She has
the most wonderful quiet temperament of any horse I
have known. She has taught 2 complete beginners how
to ride, she is the horse I feel most confident with
letting novice riders ride. You can literally leave
her in the paddock and months later saddle her up
and she behaves like she has been ridden every day,
never forgetting anything or getting rusty at it
either.
She has been shown
successfully in hand achieving
Champion mare/filly at OGHPC 2003 and Just recently
achieved Supreme Arabian at the OGHPC 2010.
So far out of
only attending a total of 5 breed shows she has won
Champion Mare/Filly twice, Reserve Champion Mare
Filly once and Supreme Arabian Once. Not a bad
effort.
Nasma has begin
her endurance career this year (2010) and we have
successfully completed a 10km, 20km and 40km training
rides with good heart rate recoveries, being lower
than or close to pre ride heart rates, and travelling at a good
10km/hour speed.
Our aim is to achieve endurance horse status,
have a go at some dressage, team penning and camp
drafting and when the time comes have another crack
at the Quilty.
This year
(2011) Claudia Johnston is riding Nasma and together
they have started their endurance career with the
20km training ride at Jarrahdale on the 20th Feb 11.
We wish them loads of success and enjoyment.
